Picosecond laser therapy at NL Clinic is an advanced technology used in treating pigmentation, in removing tattoos and permanent make-up, and in anti-acne and rejuvenating treatments.

It works in picoseconds, trillionths of a second, which allows the pigment to be broken up photoacoustically and the skin to be stimulated with a lower risk of overheating the tissue.

This is why the laser reduces: tattoos (colour ones as well), permanent make-up, pigmentation (melasma, sun spots, chloasma), post-acne changes and active acne, wrinkles and unevenness of the skin.

In acne therapy this technology works in two ways: it limits inflammation and rebuilds the structure of the skin, reducing scars and enlarged pores. In anti-ageing treatments it prompts the fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin.

Uses of the picosecond laser:

• removing tattoos and permanent make-up,
• treating acne and post-acne scars,
• removing and reducing pigmentation,
• rejuvenating the skin of the face, neck, décolletage and hands.

A shorter pulse means less heat in the skin. The pigment breaks up mechanically rather than through overheating, so the surrounding tissue is left intact. What this means for the patient is what follows from it: a lower risk of burns and scarring, and a shorter return to everyday activities. Redness usually lasts a few days rather than weeks.

Finer fragments of pigment are cleared more easily by the lymphatic system, which is why fewer sessions are needed than with older nanosecond lasers, and the next one is planned four to eight weeks later. Colours regarded as difficult, such as blue and green in a tattoo, also fade. One reservation stays unchanged. Moles need to be examined before the treatment, because a laser removes pigment but does not settle what that pigment comes from. Medicines being taken matter too, because some of them make the skin more sensitive to light.
