A skin booster, what it is and how it differs from a filler

Skin booster is the name of a treatment category, not a specific product. It works on hydration and skin quality, not on volume, and that is precisely where the line with fillers is drawn.

What is a skin booster

Skin booster is the trade name for a category of treatments in which a product based on hyaluronic acid is administered into the skin by micro-injection to improve its hydration, elasticity and surface quality. It is not a single product or a single device, so two treatments described by the same word may differ in product and application technique.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the dermis and binds water. Injectable products are produced biotechnologically and stabilised so that they remain in the tissue longer than the body's own molecule. The mechanism and indications are described on the page about hyaluronic acid revitalisation.

What cross-linking of hyaluronic acid means

Cross-linking refers to the bonds joining the acid molecules. The more of them there are, the denser the product is, the more slowly it breaks down, and the longer it remains present in the tissue. This is the one feature that organises the whole topic:

  • Non-cross-linked. Fluid, spreads through the skin, absorbed more quickly. Works on hydration and elasticity.
  • Lightly cross-linked. Lasts longer, and alongside hydration also gives light superficial filling.
  • Cross-linked. Dense and stable, intended for restoring volume and supporting tissue. This is already a filler, not a skin booster.

Skin booster versus filler, where the line is

Skin booster works on skin quality: hydration, elasticity, surface appearance. A filler works on shape: it restores lost volume and supports tissue, and when contouring is involved we talk about volumetrics. They differ in product, depth of administration, technique and risk profile.

Practical conclusion: if the problem is grey, dehydrated skin, a filler will not solve it. If the problem is a hollow cheek, a skin booster will not correct it. The consultation determines which of the two is needed, and sometimes both, spaced apart.

Skin booster versus mesotherapy with hyaluronic acid

This is the same group of treatments under two names. In the price list and on the pages of this site, the procedure is called hyaluronic acid revitalisation or hyaluronic acid mesotherapy, while skin booster is a term that patients know from the internet and social media.

The name says nothing about the concentration of the product, the technique of administration or the number of treatments, so it is not worth comparing practices by treatment name. It is worth comparing who performs it and exactly what is administered.

What a skin booster will not do

  • It will not restore volume or change the contour of the face.
  • It will not fill deep furrows or lift sagging tissue.
  • It will not remove pigmentation. Other methods work on pigment, described on the page about pigmentation.
  • It will not replace photoprotection and does not protect the skin from UV radiation.
  • It will not stop skin ageing. The effect is temporary and requires maintenance.

Sentences about strengthening the protective barrier and protecting against premature ageing were dropped from this text, because they attributed to the treatment an effect it does not have.

Safety and course of treatments

Hyaluronic acid is biocompatible with tissue, but the treatment remains an injection. After administration, swelling, bruising, tenderness and palpable lumps at the injection sites are possible, usually resolving within a few days. Infection or vascular complications occur less often, which is why qualification and administration are carried out by a doctor, and contraindications are assessed during the medical history.

A course usually includes two to three treatments at intervals of three to four weeks, with maintenance every four to six months. The number and intervals, however, follow from the assessment of the skin, not from a ready-made package.

The effect of hyaluronic acid micro-injections on fibroblast activity is described in the literature, but the scale depends on the product and protocol, so this entry does not give figures and does not promise collagen remodelling as a guaranteed outcome.

The questions we are asked most often

Does a skin booster fill wrinkles

Not in the same sense as a filler. The task of a skin booster is hydration and improving skin quality, so fine lines may become less visible thanks to better-hydrated tissue. This treatment does not fill furrows or volume loss.

How does a skin booster differ from mesotherapy with hyaluronic acid

This is the same group of treatments, described by two names. On this site, the procedure is called hyaluronic acid revitalisation, while skin booster is a trade name that patients know from the internet.

What cross-linked and non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid means

Cross-linking means bonds between the acid's molecules. A non-cross-linked preparation is liquid and absorbed more quickly, a cross-linked one is denser and stays in the tissue longer. Non-cross-linked and lightly cross-linked preparations work on skin quality, cross-linked ones on volume and support.

How many treatments does a series include and when should it be repeated

A course usually includes two to three treatments at intervals of three to four weeks, with maintenance every four to six months. The doctor sets the number and the intervals after assessing the skin.

Is the treatment safe, given that hyaluronic acid occurs in the skin

The preparation's compatibility with the tissue does not remove the treatment's risk. After administration, swelling, bruising, tenderness and small lumps at the injection sites are possible, and vascular complications and infection are possible but rarer. Qualification and administration are carried out by the doctor.

Hydration or volume, that is what we determine at the consultation

At the medical consultation we assess whether the skin needs hydration and quality improvement, or volume replenishment. These are two different procedures and two different preparations.
